Jazz and I

Because it is art. Like art it has lines, rhythms and colors, allowing emotions and dreams. And mostly allowing to creatively flow. Or skip. And even skater.

Its colors are many. Ranging in mood from blue to red. And even orange. The colors set the mood. The rhythms set the mood. The lines set the mood. But it's a funny thing about the lines. They never are straight. They wave and walk funny. Its’ lines are fun. Just like art should be.

I said hi to jazz one night in Barcelona last year in Club Jamboree (btw happy 50th anniversary). I remember it was a Catalan, Alex that made jazz sooth, embrace and send me into another world. That night was a breakthrough for me. Now it’s Wednesdays that we go in Mehrspur for meeting it. This is a 10 years old music club where I believe passion for art is instilled and cultivated. And yes, it’s almost every Wednesday now that I allow myself to get carried away.

I had to grow into loving jazz. I had to get to know it by spending time with it. By listening to what it had to say. I had to make it my friend until we finally became lovers. With jazz you won’t get in love, you will slowly fall in love…The primary reason do this it is because it’s the flip side of art, provoking the whole range of emotions while stirring the soul.

Ultimately, like any art, jazz has the ability to provide escape from a sometimes cruel world. And for that reason it is a best friend. And a lover.

Perlin

Vorbesc despre Berlin!

Chanson dada

Chanson dada

I

la chanson d'un dadaïste
qui avait dada au coeur
fatiguait trop son moteur
qui avait dada au coeur

l'ascenseur portait un roi
lourd fragile autonome
il coupa son grand bras droit
l'envoya au pape à rome

c'est pourquoi
l'ascenseur
n'avait plus dada au coeur

mangez du chocolat
lavez votre cerveau
dada
dada
buvez de l'eau

II

la chanson d'un dadaïste
qui n'était ni gai ni triste
et aimait une bicycliste
qui n'était ni gaie ni triste
mais l'époux le jour de l'an
savait tout et dans une crise
envoya au vatican
leurs deux corps en trois valises

ni amant
ni cycliste
n'étaient plus ni gais ni tristes

mangez de bons cerveaux
lavez votre soldat
dada
dada
buvez de l'eau

III

la chanson d'un bicycliste
qui était dada de coeur
qui était donc dadaïste
comme tous les dadas de coeur

un serpent portait des gants
il ferma vite la soupape
mit des gants en peau d'serpent
et vient embrasser le pape

c'est touchant
ventre en fleur
n'avait plus dada au coeur

buvez du lait d'oiseaux
lavez vos chocolats
dada
dada
mangez du veau

Tristan Tzara (1923)

- Nosé, no lo he podido escribir.
-Y que no he podido escribir.
-Me gustaría mirar la lavadora contigo.
....
-Porque nunca he querido a nadie como te he querido a ti.

Cheers!

Imi amintesc ca in ultima zi din anul trecut mi-am spus "2009 - sa fie despre bucuria culorii". Si cata culoare mi-a scaldat ochii si mi-a imbujorat obrajii anul acesta.

Este dupa-amiaza ultimul zile din an.
Doamne, ce an... 2009. Iti multumesc!!

Anul 2008 in cuvinte

Call me a woman, simt nevoia sa articulez intr-o maniera cursiva anul 2008. Din startul acestui exercitiu, imi dau sanse putine de succes dar continui pentru ca pana la urma, in fapt, insasi incercarea are valoarea si nobletea ei...

NY's rezolution pentru 2008 a fost „love in all of its forms".

Care e cuvantul potrivit? Intreg? Intregit? Intregitor?

Non, Rien De Rien, Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien

Ni Le Bien Qu`on M`a Fait, Ni Le Mal

Tout Ca M`est Bien Egal

Nu-i de mirare ca imi pare intelept sa stau. In nemiscare am inteles ce cautam – un loc care la randu-i sa ma cheme.

Am investit, am primit, am pierdut... si... in fine, am trait!

Je Me Fous Du Passé

Vali

PS: La multi ani 2009!

Slow down experience

Last night I was given to live one of the biggest surprises ever as my friends from AIESEC organized me a "Happy Birthday" reunion although it wasn't my birthday at all :) Their idea and the hole surprise really touched my heart as I felt love and I knew then that I love them just the way they are...
So, 1st of November '08 it's a really memorable day and a really crazy chapter of my "AIESEC family" story.
I am grateful for the friends I have.
I am grateful because I know now better than never that everything that happens, happens for a reason.
I am grateful for the context I live in and for my "slow down experience" :)

And here's one of my presents that goes well with my beliefs:

"Slow down you crazy child
You're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart tell me why
Are you still so afraid?
Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You better cool it off before you burn it out
You got so much to do and only
So many hours in a day

But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want
Or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through
When will you realize...Vienna waits for you

Slow down you're doing fine
You can't be everything you want to be
Before your time
Although it's so romantic on the borderline tonight (tonight)
Too bad but it's the life you lead
You're so ahead of yourself
That you forgot what you need
Though you can see when you're wrong
You know you can't always see when you're right(you're right)

You got your passion you got your pride
But don't you know that only fools are satisfied?
Dream on but don't imagine they'll all come true
When will you realize
Vienna waits for you

Slow down you crazy child
Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while
It's alright you can afford to lose a day or two
When will you realize...
Vienna waits for you.

And you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want
Or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through

Why don't you realize...Vienna waits for you
When will you realize...Vienna waits for you"

Apuseni... VERDE

In Apuseni am invatat sa-mi recunosc expresia propriei identitati, oricat de complexe... Pe dealul cu melci le-am dat nume nuantelor - Verde Dor, Verde Emotie, Verde Seductie, Verde Prietenie, Verde Adevar, Verde Sinceritate, Verde Umilinta, Verde Inteles, Verde Cunoastere, Verde Iubire.

Verde Umilinta... Sunt fericita!

Raising the level of strategic readiness

This is an interesting article written by Rukmal De Silva from Uleash Talent Inc., Sri Lanka. It's based on the topic of strategic readiness, one of the training subjects developed within the company.

By Rukmal De Silva

Do you remember the funny story that you may have heard at some management training about three types of people in this world. People who make things happen, who wait till things happen and who wonder what happened. Probably you do. That story is all about strategic readiness.
First, it makes sense to define what we mean by strategic readiness. As implied in the enclosed questionnaire, it consists of strategic comprehension and ability to mobilize the formulated strategy.
Understanding who we are and where we stand, where we should go and how we get there is the foundation of strategic comprehension. This is the internal view. On the other hand, when it comes to strategic comprehension, you need to have the antennas out there to be in touch with the reality outside your organization. Third, you need to have humility to take the brutal facts of reality as they are and deal with them. Finally, your processes need to support all this.
The mobilization of strategy calls for engaging others into the process. The sooner this step is taken, the better the outcome. Thus, the best enabler of strategic mobilization is your organizational style or culture. Relating to that, you need to be able to put your ego aside if you want to be strategically ready organization. Your ability to take risks and allow failure comes third.
Finally, your processes – especially finances and leadership at all levels – need to support the strategy mobilization.
Now, even though your organization would score poorly when measuring your current strategic readiness, you don’t have to go instantly firing the top management. Strategic readiness can be developed through practice and acquisition of theoretical knowledge. Note, however, that if you embark on this development process, it needs commitment from more than one person in your organization. In the following we reveal some thoughts to get you started.

Heart and the head

Sadly, many organizations and managers think that they exist first and foremost to make loads of money. After a grand career – or maybe a burnout – they leave the company feeling somewhat empty. Of course money is the top priority of top companies, but it’s not the reason for their existence. It’s rather a positive side product. You need to be clear on what you really love to do, what is that something that makes you tick.
That conviction will open many doors for you and will tune your head to see many aspects of the world which you may have missed.
When that starting point is clear, and the guiding values are agreed on and utilized, it’s so much easier to embark on the journey of focused and strategic action.
To make sure the others are ready to join this journey, the best strategic leaders appeal to people’s hearts as well as their heads. When your organization is able to connect to people on the emotional level and offer a rationale, you have all the chances to succeed.
Indeed, in the old economy it was enough that you deal with the head. The decision would be made only when you had enough numerical proof behind it. Still today it can be claimed that analytical skills are something every strategist should have. However, in today’s information age it’s not anymore enough that you are able to break down complex entities and study them under the microscope. You also need an ability to synthesise: to form something new out of the bits and pieces of information pouring in from every direction.
This managing complexity helps in staying ahead of technological, cultural and market trends. Although information systems can be helpful; it’s the curiosity and skill of people that needs to be harnessed to maintain the organization’s ability to learn. Organization – or at least parts of it – needs to be constantly evaluated, improved, shaken and stirred. Once you have a tight-knit team of people in the strategic leadership of your organization who are able to work together and synthesize new ideas into implementable strategies, you have come a long way from operational management done by individuals.
Yet one of the biggest hurdles you may have to overcome is your own self. Your ego and your emotional attachment to your business could put you in a blind spot. In the face of strategic challenges your humility could bring you greater results.

Gut feeling

Today’s constantly changing business environment calls for agility, even from big corporations. And that agility is reached only if people are empowered to make decisions on their own, within a given framework of guidelines. Similarly, the strategic decisions should not be dwelled on too long, but if something feels right, it might just be right.
Actually this is quite a relief for many people dealing with strategy; you don’t need to be a fortune teller to be a good strategist. Unconscious competence would do. You just need to formulate a catchy and simple strategy that inspires people and gives guidelines for further operational plans and action.
Trusting the gut feeling is much easier when an array of opinions is available. That’s why the strategic leaders gladly welcome people from all rungs of the organizational ladder to join in the process. Though getting decisions done and making corrections to direction later on might sound like a good option, there is one trait in contemporary strategic leadership that especially needs the traditional approach. Ironically that trait deals with the future, not the past.
It’s the possible intentions, actions and reactions of competitors, customers and government authorities that need to be predicted and prepared for. Forgetting this while doing strategic decisions leads to failure in the future, as the data gathered for the decision is taken solely from the reality that existed in the past.

Cause and effect or leapfrogs

We are no longer living in the linear world where, as a rule, effect follows a cause. Customer demands, CEOs, stock values, companies, or even whole industries can change overnight. Look what Internet or mobile technology has done to the way we operate in our daily life, talk with anyone from the airline industry after 9/11, or visit the empty beaches of Mirissa and Unawatuna after the Galle attack to see how some things just cannot be predicted.
That’s why the exemplary strategic leaders are ready to experiment at the face of uncertainty. They always hold a couple of aces up their sleeve just in case the reality deals them a poor hand, and most importantly: They are willing to make short-term sacrifices for long-term benefits. Those organizations that are always ahead of their competition are the ones who are continuously implementing their strategy. And for that they have the necessary dollars and other resources put aside. Last but definitely not least, they maintain a culture that supports experimentation and tolerance for risk-taking and failure in order to be ready to welcome the unexpected positive serendipity.
Strategy is not something that you cannot change once you fix it for the next three years. Rather, it should be understood as a learning process. But do not ever put your ego or your self-interest before the strategy. Be prepared to eat humble pie at least once in a while. Let go of the emotional ties to your idea, your project or your master plan. Set the strategy, implement operations and initiatives that are in line with it, tweak if necessary and at the end of the set time period you can clearly see the path you have walked.
Have a hearty laugh, because more often than not the sights you saw at the road were not exactly what you expected.
However, hold on to your dream! Who cares about an occasional walk astray or even a dead-end, if you have consciously gone where you wanted to go? In the beginning you might have had only dreams of where to go, but a good strategy can be your ever-illuminating torch in the deepest and darkest caves of uncertainty.
To communicate a strategy to others, it needs to be clear and focused. Ensuring that every manager at every level is accountable for contributing to the overall strategy is easier said than done.
When leaders are rolling out enticing campaigns for introducing new strategic initiatives, people might think “it’s just another management fad of the year”.
However, in the best organizations the people know why these initiatives are launched, because they were part of formulating the overall strategy where they derive from.
This way the strategic leadership is spread evenly across the organization and the top management can concentrate on building and sustaining momentum through clear communication and cheerleading.

Dive in

Opportunities are around but they are not thrown at us from heaven. You need to tune your whole organization, not only your MD’s or CEO’s mind. To wrap this all up, try to remember at least these suggestions: Be humble. Put your ego aside. First comprehend. Then analyze and synthesize. Reflect. Do not be afraid to be a destroyer and a creator.
Try what you can learn from cartoons. Decide what you want to become. Even the sloths of today can become the saber tooth tigers of tomorrow!
Think about your organization and rate all the following statements from 1-5 (1 being “completely disagree”, 3 being “agree with hesitance” and 5 “ totally agree ”). Then calculate the sum for both the mobility and comprehension categories. Check from the key below what is your current strategic readiness.

Strategic comprehension Statement
1.We have an understanding of our reason for existence and the that guide the way.

2.We are 100% clear of what we are passionate about.

3.We know how the key stakeholders will react to the emerging trends of the market.
4.We have an absolute and shared understanding of our three year goal and the key strategies to achieve it.

5.We know where we are most vulnerable.

6.Our individuals and teams understand how they can contribute to the strategy formulation and
implementation.
7.We are all the time aware of the exact current status of the industry and our competitive stance in it.

8.We are staying updated of technological, cultural and market trends in our business.
9. We are aware of the emerging best practices.

10. We know the latest moves of our competitors.

11. Each of our key functional managers takes responsibility of looking up and internalizing new and better practices into their function.

12.When discussing strategic issues, we are not tied in our operational or functional role but maintain a holistic perspective.
13.We do not underestimate our competition.
14.We have a system to share any relevant information we come to know about.

Ability to mobilize strategy Statement
1.We have a proven track record of easily figuring out what to do when we are challenged strategically.

2.In our organization new things are getting done all the time.

3.We have a demonstrated tendency to learn from our mistakes and internalise the learning points to our business model.
4.We do not have to wait till the boss moves first.
5.When required we are comfortable in being spontaneous and irrational within certain limits.

6.We have reserved a separate budget for strategy implementation.

7.Our managers are held accountable to keep the strategies in motion.
8.We use strategic work assignments to engage and train our future leaders.

9.We can implement changes without resistance.
10.Our leadership team is bold enough to address the stickiest issues together.

11.We are willing to keep our egos and attached emotions aside, and carve out even better solutions together.

12.We are even willing do changes with the total business model if required.

13.We are encouraged to experiment.

14.We have the capacity to make short term sacrifices for long term gains.

Mobility 50+, Comprehension 50+

Your organization’s strategic readiness is like that of Diego the saber tooth tiger’s. With your capabilities formulating, communicating, cascading and implementing strategy is easy. Capitalize on your organization’s strategic readiness to get and maintain competitive edge!

Mobility below 50, Comprehension 50+

You are Manny the mammoth of strategic readiness. Your organization’s capability for carving out strategies is high but you are unable to spread the strategy into the organization and get things done based on it. Build on your wit and develop competencies further on the mobilization part.

Mobility 50+, Comprehension below 50

Scrat the squirrel, your organization is moving on dangerous waters… but fast! You’re able to mobilize your organization to carry out new things on an ever-increasing speed. You start a lot of things but usually they are nothing more than management fads with no effect.
The most troublesome is that your managers might even think they are doing a meaningful work, without admitting there’s a problem. Seek help soon to get your act together. Do not allow your organization to be a country club. By stopping for a while to see what’s really important you can even become a tiger!

Mobility below 50, Comprehension below 50

Dear Sid the sloth, your organization has neither the strategic thinking nor the agility in place.
The best decision at the moment is to humbly get someone to help you with the basics of strategy and then get back to the drawing board to practice strategy formulation and implementation. It’s a long hard road, but if you are willing to run an extra mile everything is possible.

Your Balance Number is 7
As long as your life is on an even or uplifting keel balance numbers are relatively dormant. However, in those times when your life is out of order your Balance Number can become central to resolving the turmoil you are experiencing. Your Balance Number reflects the traits you need to bring to the forefront in order the get through difficult periods with the least amount of damage or time wasted on negative influences.

A 7 Balance Number indicates you may have a tendency to hide from your problems and address them with too much of your emotional self. During times of trouble you need to act rationally and be prepared to deal with events as they unfold. Stressful times are certainly not good moments for you to withdraw from the world. To do so will only make things worse.

Vara aceasta

Buna seara Raluca,

Cum a trecut asa repede? Si uite cum acum in timp ce scriu imi tot zboara gandurile la the lovely Cardigans...
" Oh with the sun in my eyes
Surprise, I'm living a life..."

Scrie-mi Raluca despre tine...intr-o dupa-amiaza visatoare, intr-o dupa-amiaza Debussy. Si ai grija de tine.

Cu drag,
Vali

I am your mind and soul... I am your mind.. I am... I

I miss being unified - body, mind and soul... I miss being me at my full capacity. But I am and I shall be.

Here's to the common relationship between the mind, the intellect and the soul. A beautiful groove with conscious depth.

Roy Ayers

I Am Your Mind (Part 2)

If you believe in yourself
You’ll know the real you
It’s coming from within
Sincerely, sincerely

You subject yourself to being vulnerable
Not knowing why you fall in love
And so you become
What you are made to become
It’s not at all fair that I feel as I do
Tell me something to make me feel better

My sister, I am your mind. Within you there’s a never-ending magnitude of infinite strength, wisdom and will. You travel my roads through life never knowing your own true reality because my thoughts remain like distant quasars. You abuse me by never letting me say and do as I feel. Our thoughts split from love affairs to choice of friends. We argue like two enemies yet we are good friends.

Now, there are moments when we harmonize with each other, and become one with nature and reality. But these times are few. When after you have replenished yourself, the fear of the truth sets in. We split, and you start to run again. Running, running, running. Running through women, men, jobs, people and life looking for the answer when I had it all along. But I smile… because I am your mind.

I was your mind yesterday; I am your mind today; and I’ll be your mind tomorrow. And as our end draws near we will become closer. But you and I, you and I, we will never be one, for I will part from you and you will part from me; you finding another mind and I another soul. And we’ll travel on and on.

By the way, I need more than sex to nourish my equilibrium. But I do need sex. I also need sun, trees, stars, creativity and love. But you saturate my soul with too much of one and not enough of the other. Therefore I cry. But why do we cry? Because tears cleanse the windows of our minds. I am your mind.

Tell me something to make me feel better

All your thoughts inside your mind wanting to be free

Well, now you’ve got the chance to let your mind grow… and be free. Because the music is just trying to say things to free your mind. And if you let your mind be free, then you can understand mine. There’s no need to be afraid of me. I want to be your friend. I’m just trying to give you music from deep, deep, deep within.

And on and on, and on and on

Tell me something to make me feel better

All of your dreams can become reality. My dial reaches full, but you’ve only been turning me halfway. Turn me up, and alpha and theta waves will spew from your pores. Knowledge, peace, happiness and prosperity will be placed at your feet. Let’s, let’s create. Solve. Love. Accomplish. And unify. As-Salaam-Alaikum.

Think about the rainforest

Lasa oamenii sa ti se intample

“Deschide ochii.

In autobuze, pe strada, in masini, in tramvaie oamenii dorm.

Daca trage aer in piept, e doar descumpanita.

Deschide ochii. Nimic bun n-are sa iasa din asta.

Deschide ochii. Nu pot sa te mint, o sa ti-o iei in bot. Falfaitul niciunui inger nu va bloca lovitura.
O sa ti-o iei si o sa simti ca te doare. E tot ce pot sa-ti promit. O sa simti.
Daca ti-e teama, tine-i inchisi. E doar sapun. Numai atunci cand te ustura prea tare sub pleoape, numai atunci.

Deschide ochii.”

Awarness...

Most of us like to use our minds to figure out things, so let's use the mind to explore the concept of Awareness.

Our mind tells us that we can't be the same thing as the object we are aware of. Thus, as you look at your computer, you are aware of the computer.

It is thus safe to say that if you are aware of your computer, you can't be your computer. Similarly, if you are aware of your desk right now, you can't be your desk.

If you see a car on the street and are aware of it, then you can't be that car.

Now let's consider your body. Right now, are you aware of your body? Of course, the answer is "Yes;" you're aware of your body. Even if you didn't have physical sight, you would be aware of your body.

Well, if you are aware of your body, then you can't be your body.

Are you aware of your thoughts? Yes.

If you are aware of your thoughts, you can't be your thoughts.

Are you aware of your emotions, such as happiness or sadness?
Yes.

If you are aware of your emotions, you can't be your emotions.

What then are YOU?

Think about this again. Can you be the thing you are aware of?

I realize this sounds a bit tricky. Yet it certainly seems that there is an Awareness, a non-physical presence, that is aware of your body, as well as your thoughts and emotions.

Some of you might be a step ahead and think that this Awareness or Consciousness is located inside the skull, and is a function of the brain. This has been analyzed by scientists
and those who have devoted much of their lives to spirituality, and the majority of these people have come to the conclusion that Awareness is NOT localized in the brain..

By the way, even if you believe that Awareness is inside your brain, how do you explain what happens when the body dies? Does Awareness or Consciousness leap out of the brain at the
moment of death? While I can accept (and even embrace) the view that Awareness or Spirit is everlasting, it seems awfully difficult to believe that the essence of us is lodged in the
brain during life and then is suddenly freed from the brain at death.

Let's look at this from another angle. If, as quantum physicists tell us, ALL matter is composed of vibrating subatomic particles in 99.9% empty space, that means our brain
is composed of vibrating particles in EMPTY space. How can anything be located "inside" empty space?

If you're confused, welcome to the club. The mind likes to ignore those bits of information that don't fit neatly into its preconceived beliefs. This inquiry invites you into the unknown, which can be very scary at first.

Our sense of Awareness has another fascinating quality I'd like you to examine. Think of something that worries you and makes you feel very anxious. Get that feeling of fear in the
pit of your stomach.

Once you have the feeling in place, just observe the feeling as an impartial observer. Don't judge it, or try to get rid of it. Allow it to be there. Just observe it as if you are a witness to the feeling.

Are you able to observe the fear as if you are a bystander? You have the ability to do that.

Here's an interesting conclusion you may reach: the part of you that is observing the fear is NOT afraid. In other words, it appears that a casual observer is the "one" observing "your" fear.

The same thing happens if you are angry - and you just observe your feelings of anger. The entity observing the anger is NOT angry. It seems to be impartial.

What is that part of YOU that is doing this impartial observing? How is it that I can be angry and yet some part of me can watch or observe that feeling, while somehow being "detached" from the anger?

Not an easy thing to figure out right away. Yet, if you are honest with yourself, you will eventually come to the conclusion that there is something in the background, all the
time, that seems to be Aware or Conscious of everything going on. When we are caught up in our thoughts and emotions, we aren't aware of this Awareness. But that doesn't mean it isn't there. It is always there.

The concept of Awareness or Consciousness is often discussed in many of the Eastern religions and spiritual traditions, where the principle of non-duality (Oneness) is popular. Those who endorse non-duality believe that your true nature is not a physical body - but Awareness or Consciousness itself - and that all physical matter arises within this field of Awareness.

Even if you think these ideas are far-fetched, I think you'll find that when examined, there IS some mysterious Awareness that is always in the background. It doesn't matter what religion you follow; it has nothing to do with religion. This Awareness is present regardless of what you may believe about it, or if you choose to ignore it.

Into the wild

I saw this movie... it's called just like that "Into the wild" and it was inspired by a true story worth to tell it to the world I guess...It captures in an authentic and inspiring manner all the paradox and lack of true value of this world. It made me think about what can I do each and every day... for not killing the truth of everyday.

"Oh it's a mystery to me.
We have a greed, with which we have agreed...
and you think you have to want more than you need...
until you have it all, you won't be free.

Society, you're a crazy breed.
I hope you're not lonely, without me.

When you want more than you have, you think you need...
and when you think more then you want, your thoughts begin to bleed.
I think I need to find a bigger place...
cause when you have more than you think, you need more space.

Society, you're a crazy breed.
I hope you're not lonely, without me.
Society, crazy indeed...
I hope you're not lonely, without me.

There's those thinkin' more or less, less is more,
but if less is more, how you keepin' score?
It means for every point you make, your level drops.
Kinda like you're startin' from the top...
and you can't do that.

Society, you're a crazy breed.
I hope you're not lonely, without me.
Society, crazy indeed...
I hope you're not lonely, without me
Society, have mercy on me.
I hope you're not angry, if I disagree.
Society, crazy indeed.
I hope you're not lonely...
without me."

Somehow it captures too many metaphors and truths that worth be told and lived everyday. Traveling inside makes me wanna be even stronger. Inner stronger that 1 million other.. cause I wanna change.. I wanna change...

Humility ... I believe that’s an essential value for innovation leadership

"Wherever you go, there you are!"
—Buckaroo Bonzai, in the movie –The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai (Also the title of a book on mindfulness meditation by Jon Kabat-Zinn)

Bringing innovation to life anywhere in the organization requires the following five key values which are essential for values for both Leadership and Innovation:

  • Integrity – Doing what you say you’ll do.
  • Tenacity – Persistently and doggedly pursuing an option or solution until it succeeds and/or others see the brilliance of it.
  • Courage – Being brave about pursuing options that are risky, novel, or untried.
  • Curiosity – Being interested in new ways of doing things, unusual approaches, or things that are outside of your area of expertise. Consciously not knowing the answer, and seeking new ones instead. Consciously learning.
  • Humility – Recognizing that ideas can come from other people, a willingness to change your mind, being able to admit mistakes when you make them, and being willing to learn from the mistakes of others, rather than punishing them.

A question of Integrity

The critical questions of integrity are, “Am I behaving congruently with my values and the values of innovation leadership?” “Am I measuring up to these fundamentals?”

If however you notice a slight bit of discomfort with yourself in response to the integrity question…if you notice a bit of an itch in your moral fiber…good! Now you’ve got some awareness of where you need to scratch to sniff out the personal development need beneath the surface that you’re presenting to the world. And that is the work of the ever evolving innovation leader.

So what is Integrity?

We asked our colleagues what integrity meant to them. They said that a person demonstrating the value of integrity is someone who:

· Is honest

· Stands up for what they believe in

· Knows who they are

· Is steadfast

· Willing to make tough -- even unpopular -- decisions

· Courageous in conflict

· Does what they say

· Considers what’s best for the group rather than what’s best for themselves

· You can count on

· Who keeps their promises

· You can really trust to do the right thing

· Walks their talk

Refreshingly, in the tone of their voice it was clear that integrity was a virtue they admired and aspired to.

What does this have to do with Innovation Leadership?

From an innovation perspective, a leader who has integrity with the values of tenacity, curiosity, courage and humility is well-positioned to explore and exploit new ideas. By actively living these values they end up more willing and able to suspend their first judgment of others’ ideas and are more open so they can encourage and support others. They are less afraid to make mistakes themselves and to model this for others. They are more accepting of others’ (well-intentioned) mistakes. They are more able and willing to candidly express what they think and feel and to take action on them.

In other words, integrity is essential for innovation because it is critical for demonstrating to the people around you in the organization that you mean what you say about searching for innovation. Imagine the manager who asks for innovation yet punishes people for a) making mistakes, b) taking risks, c) challenging the status quo, or d) trying things outside “the system.” Certainly in some cases, these four things might be a bad idea, but in the quest for innovation they are inevitable and indeed, necessary. So when those actions are punished, the conclusion that emerges is, “sure s/he says they want innovation, but their actions say otherwise.”

“What you are stands over you and thunders so that I cannot hear what you say to the contrary.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Tying the five values together

It’s not surprising that innovators are drawn to people who demonstrate integrity with the other four key values. Courageous, curious, tenacious and humble are qualities that true creative thinkers aspire to become. The leaders we are most drawn to over the long haul are those who authentically live these values. It’s more than skin deep. How admired leaders come across -- their demeanor, their way of presenting themselves, their questions and ideas and the congruence of their words and deeds -- is a big part of their attraction. So in the quest to become an Innovation Leader, work on intention and presentation. This is easiest and most effective when intention and presentation are one and the same. And that takes practice in humility, curiosity, courage and tenacity and integrity to their core beliefs.

This is one of life’s greatest challenges. Think of the many stories we have of people who fail to practice and live up to their (stated) beliefs. Most of the jokes on late night talk shows are jabs at the disconnect between what “leaders” and other “heroes” say compared with what they actually do. We quickly become cynical about leaders whose talk doesn’t align with their actions. In our cynical society, we tend to look for these disconnects in our leaders as a way to humanize them. We search for the flaws that would give us pause in trusting them, perhaps as a way to make ourselves feel better or more important. This speaks to the critical nature of humility; by demonstrating and presenting ourselves as fallible humans, it’s safer for others to trust us.

The Challenge of Integrity

We all are faced with challenges of staying in integrity. Everyday we face small and large choices in saying and doing what is right for our particular situation. There are not always easy answers and unfortunately, we are wired to easily rationalize our decisions – we delude ourselves after the fact to believing we were demonstrating integrity.

Example: A new manager working on a deep ocean oil rig had responsibility for deciding when the weather was too dangerous for his undersea diving crew to stay on the bottom doing their work. His boss was a famous achiever and had implied the manager would receive great recognition and other rewards for exceeding production milestones. A huge ocean storm was brewing. What should he do? In the end he left the crew down until the storm was way too close. Only through sheer luck did the crew make it out of the water alive. Reflecting on the events afterwards, this manager saw that he put his own interests before his men. He had enough honesty with himself to not rationalize the decision (“it all worked out for the best…I made the right decision!”), so he received a life lesson which he used to change his future behaviors as an innovation leader. How might he have been in integrity with curiosity and courage to both take care of his team and achieve the production targets? Constantly asking oneself these kind of questions is the behavior of the Innovation Leader.

As leaders we are all faced with these kinds of leadership dilemmas:
  • Do I focus more on safety or efficiency?
  • How much can I cut costs here and still provide a quality safe process or product?
  • Should I layoff people for the sake of profits or survival?
  • Can I bet the future of the company on a new approach?
  • Should we abandon what’s always worked in the past to change with the times?

As innovation leaders we are challenged to find the right solution. The ideal is to ask “How might we avoid “either/or” solutions and find ways to do “both/and” answers?” By adopting a curious, courageous, tenacious and humble mindset we are more apt to find the right questions to spark innovative solutions. And integrity to these values, and to core beliefs in what is right, will help us know when we’ve found the best answer.

“I look for three things in hiring people. The first is personal integrity, the second is intelligence, and the third is a high energy level. If you don’t have the first, the other two will kill you.”
— Warren Buffett, CEO Berkshire Hathaway

Fresh end

I needed to escape for a few minutes from writing my paper for the exam I'm having on Monday morning. I needed to go for just a moment in a beautiful place of my past. I needed to feel again as if I'm in the sweet arms of my friends who although we live in the same city I see more rarely... There's no context anymore that facilitates us getting altogether. And I'm not complaining, as I know that we can change that after the faculty is over.

The music is all around us

Wondering what would merge in the real world of mine people together. No sentimentalism. Just thinking at a meta-formula or a simple thing that could get us all together. And together for me means somehow in the same equation of feelings, power and beauty. I bet that living this just for one moment would change the world, our world.

And as I watched with my mum a week ago the film "August Rush" I got an answer to my question, which made me happy. Hey petite Fleur, someplace somebody is asking himself the same question. It may be music as good music is everywhere if you can hear it. Can you hear it? Just close your eyes and listen. It's real. My window is closed and I can still hear the pigeons singing in the tree just in front of me. It's a wonderful moment in May now and I'm living it without considering in which extent it's good to be intense, it's good to feel and to admit you love feeling and listening to the music all around.

It's just another normal day after a pleasant evening spent last night with an Alumni of ours - Vio Panaite. I drank my coffee in the morning doing my ritual of checking e-mails. I've had a nice surprise from Singapore as an ex AIESEC member that went in a traineeship there and to whom I wrote yesterday asking him more about his experience replied with some insights. I'm traveling with my eyes wide open on different continents. After this I'm gonna do my morning exercise and then go to school as I feel today is a good day for the future. The air is going to be fresh as it rained a lot yesterday... it's good to live and be aware of the beauty and music all around.

Thank you God!

Niciodata sincron
Sau poate decat prea rar.

Scenariul meu este cu sufletul la vedere
La vederea mea si a ta,
A ta si a lui
A noastra.

Asa.
